Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's One-Day International Team Against Team India

Labuschagne finds himself omitted from Australia's three-match ODI series against India, with high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw getting a shock inclusion.

Recent Form Lead to Omission

Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international squad following managing only a single run in his two batting efforts during the top-end series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a highest score of forty-seven in his last 10 ODI innings.

The 31-year-old has featured in 68 ODIs and amassed 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a return to the Test side in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.

Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Changes

Labuschagne has shown signs of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw scored a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw could to make his ODI debut in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a return to the Test team as Australia seek a solution to their opening batting issues.

Pace Additions and Injury News

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after taking a break since excelling for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the build-up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

Skipper Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a back injury in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures

Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 teams after smashing a century in the last match against New Zealand to seal a 2-0 series win last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India commences on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from 29 October.
