‘It sounds like witchcraft’: can light therapy really give you better skin, cleaner teeth, stronger joints?
Phototherapy is certainly having a surge in popularity. You can now buy illuminated devices targeting issues like complexion problems and aging signs along with aching tissues and oral inflammation, recently introduced is a dental hygiene device outfitted with small red light diodes, marketed by the company as “a breakthrough for domestic dental hygiene.” Internationally, the market was worth $1bn in 2024 and is projected to grow to $1.8bn by 2035. You can even go and sit in an infrared sauna, that employ light waves rather than traditional heat sources, the thermal energy targets your tissues immediately. As claimed by enthusiasts, the experience resembles using an LED facial mask, enhancing collagen production, relaxing muscles, reducing swelling and long-term ailments as well as supporting brain health.
Research and Reservations
“It feels almost magical,” observes a Durham University professor, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Of course, certain impacts of light on human physiology are proven. Sunlight enables vitamin D production, crucial for strong bones, immune defense, and tissue repair. Sunlight regulates our circadian rhythms, as well, stimulating neurotransmitter and hormone production during daytime, and preparing the body for rest as darkness falls. Various Phototherapy Approaches
Although mood lamps generally utilize blue-spectrum frequencies, the majority of phototherapy tools use red or near-infrared wavelengths. Light constitutes electromagnetic energy, spanning from low-energy radio waves to short-wavelength gamma rays. Light-based treatment uses wavelengths around the middle of this spectrum, with ultraviolet representing the higher energy invisible light, followed by visible light encompassing rainbow colors and then infrared (which we can see with night-vision goggles).
Dermatologists have utilized UV therapy for extensive periods for addressing long-term dermatological issues like vitiligo. It affects cellular immune responses, “and reduces inflammatory processes,” notes a skin specialist. “Substantial research supports light therapy.” UVA goes deeper into the skin than UVB, while the LEDs in consumer devices (which generally deliver red, infrared or blue light) “typically have shallower penetration.”
Safety Considerations and Medical Oversight
The side-effects of UVB exposure, such as burning or tanning, are well known but in medical devices the light is delivered in a “narrow-band” form – meaning smaller wavelengths – which minimises the risks. “Treatment is monitored by medical staff, so the dosage is monitored,” says Ho. Essentially, the light sources are adjusted by technical experts, “to guarantee appropriate wavelength emission – unlike in tanning salons, where regulations may be lax, and wavelength accuracy isn’t verified.”
Consumer Devices and Evidence Gaps
Red and blue light sources, he says, “don’t have strong medical applications, but they may help with certain conditions.” Red LEDs, it is proposed, enhance blood flow, oxygen uptake and skin cell regeneration, and activate collagen formation – a key aspiration in anti-ageing effects. “Studies are available,” states the dermatologist. “But it’s not conclusive.” Regardless, with numerous products on the market, “we don’t know whether or not the lights emitted are reflective of the research that has been done. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, proper positioning requirements, if benefits outweigh potential risks. Many uncertainties remain.”
Targeted Uses and Expert Opinions
Early blue-light applications focused on skin microbes, bacteria linked to pimples. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – even though, says Ho, “it’s often seen in medical spas or aesthetics practices.” Certain patients incorporate it into their regimen, he mentions, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we advise cautious experimentation and safety verification. If it’s not medically certified, the regulation is a bit grey.”
Cutting-Edge Studies and Biological Processes
Simultaneously, in a far-flung field of pioneering medical science, Chazot has been experimenting with brain cells, discovering multiple mechanisms for infrared’s cellular benefits. “Nearly every test with precise light frequencies demonstrated advantageous outcomes,” he says. It is partly these many and varied positive effects on cellular health that have driven skepticism about light therapy – that claims seem exaggerated. But his research has thoroughly changed his mind in that respect.
Chazot mostly works on developing drug treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, though twenty years earlier, a physician creating light-based cold sore therapy requested his biological knowledge. “He developed equipment for cellular and insect experiments,” he explains. “I remained doubtful. It was an unusual wavelength of about 1070 nanometres, which most thought had no biological effect.”
The advantage it possessed, nevertheless, was its efficient water penetration, allowing substantial bodily penetration.
Mitochondrial Effects and Brain Health
Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, generating energy for them to function. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, particularly in neural cells,” says Chazot, who, as a neuroscientist, decided to focus the research on brain cells. “Research confirms improved brain blood flow with phototherapy, which is always very good.”
Using 1070nm wavelength, energy organelles generate minimal reactive oxygen compounds. In low doses this substance, notes the scientist, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, preserve cell function and eliminate damaged proteins.”
Such mechanisms indicate hope for cognitive disorders: antioxidant, inflammation reduction, and waste removal – autophagy representing cellular waste disposal.
